The Pizza Poetry Project: Celebrating 7.5 Years of Uplifting Youth Voice Through Pizza
NEW ORLEANS (press release) – On April 30, hot pizza comes with a fresh poem by a young New Orleanian in celebration of the 7.5 annual Pizza Poetry Project.
Established by youth writing nonprofit 826 New Orleans in 2014, the Pizza Poetry Project is a delicious celebration of National Poetry Month, youth voice, and the vibrant youth literary community in New Orleans. Each Pizza Poetry Day, poems of all kinds are published on pizza boxes from some of the best local pizza joints. Due to the pandemic, we were unable to finish last year’s Pizza Poetry Project and have dubbed this year’s to be Pizza Poetry 7.5.
Leading up to Pizza Poetry Day, 826 New Orleans hosted virtual in-school poetry-writing workshops for educators and provided resources for students to directly submit their own poetry, such as Take & Make Kits available at the library and video lessons on our Youtube channel. This year, we supported over 700 students writing poetry for Pizza Poetry Day.
826 New Orleans is thrilled to collaborate with an amazing group of pizza partners this year: Homegrown Pizza, Pizza Delicious, Reginelli’s (all locations), and Theo’s Neighborhood Pizza (all locations). In addition to publishing youth poetry on each pizza box, our partners generously donate 10-20% of their daily profits on Pizza Poetry Day to 826 New Orleans’s programs. Order a pizza for delivery or pickup on April 30th from one of our pizza partners, receive a poem, and join the citywide celebration of the power of youth voice.
