The Scoop: A Few Downtown Bars

Last week we received emails asking about two new bars downtown. We followed the path and ended up in some really cool places. We all know the city has fabulous hotel bars, but here are a few that might excite you. You may even add them to your places to visit this summer.

Madam’s Modern Bar (1300 Canal St.) is located on the first floor of the new B Hotel on Canal Street. The bar has just been open for two weeks and has a retro feel that is reminiscent of the turn of the century. The hotel is recently renovated and close to most of our famous attractions. The dim lights set the mood with red light accents. The lead bartender, Amos Jenkins said, “We are poised to be a hot spot with a focus on craft cocktails.” The drink list looks good, but it's the 1300 Canal drink that caught our attention. It’s made with cognac, strawberry purée, lemon and topped with champagne. This place is small and intimate and has a small kitchen with fare to compliment the cocktails.

Vue Nola (1600 Canal St.) has been quoted on Yelp as being one of the “coolest” rooftop bars. It’s on the penthouse level of the SpringHill TownePlace Suites by Marriott – on the 14th floor to be exact – in the historic former ODECO office building. The view is amazing and features panoramic views from the Vieux Carre to the Mississippi River. It’s comfortable, trendy and has fun decor. The menu offers wine, beer and signature drinks. We like the Just Relax Darlin’, which has Brugal Anejo rum, passion fruit purée, vanilla syrup, lemon juice, pineapple and orange juice. The staff is very friendly and the place is brand spanking new – only open for six weeks. The Food and Beverage Director Courtney McGowen said, “we are hoping everyone comes to see us, including locals and travelers from around the world. We are moving full steam ahead.” There are plans to do fun activities like service industry night, theme nights and having a DJ. Stay tuned for more at this rooftop venue.

Desi Vega’s (628 St. Charles Ave.) is a steakhouse, but the happy hour here is simply great and affordable. The specials run from Tuesday through Friday for 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Offerings include $5 Grey Goose and Crown Royal, $6 select wines and $3 domestic beer. The lounge is comfortable with a glass front, which is great for downtown people watching. A nice gathering stop for after work gatherings.

We love that you asked us to check these places out. If you have a great cocktail bar that we should know about, let us know so we can share it with cocktail lovers everywhere.
