Summer in New Orleans brings a multitude of different types of weather and one of the main culprits is rain. Right now, we’re in the midst of our first big rain event and it got the editor’s thinking what we can do when the rain ruins normal outdoor plans.
Theatre + Art
New Orleans is a city for the arts. Not only do we have a multitude of galleries – check out St. Charles Avenue’s Gallery Insider feature here, but there is also a great number of museums that can take up a good chunk of a rainy day. The National WWII Museum is one of the city’s biggest attractions and brings visitors from all over the world. New Orleans Museum of Art is a gorgeous spot within New Orleans City Park and there even is a place to eat inside the museum. A different kind of museum experience is the Sazerac House. There are self-guided tours and tasting experiences for those interested in learning more about the city spirit. If that wasn’t enough, we suggest heading to one of our many theaters to take in a production of a play or musical by our local artists. Le Petit Theatre, Rivertown Theaters and Crescent City Stage have a regular schedule of shows and performances. AND think about taking in a movie at The Broad Theater or Prytania Theatres.
For All Ages
New Orleans may seem like an adults-only destination, but there is a lot to do for kids of all ages. Two of the main attractions are the Louisiana Children’s Museum – also located in City Park – and the Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium. Both of these locations offer hours of entertainment. There is also the Museum of Illusions and JAMNOLA to keep kids big and small occupied with exciting installations and interesting pieces of art.
Music + Entertainment
There is never a shortage of live music and concerts to attend around the city. Anyone looking to experience the true music of New Orleans can make their way down to Frenchman Street. Whether it’s d.b.a., Snug Harbor, Blue Nile or any of the venues, you’re sure to find something you like. The Saenger Theatre, the Joy Theater, The Civic Theatre and The Fillmore or just a few of the venues that regularly host nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians, comedians, Broadway shows and so much more.
Other Fun Options
Everyone knows New Orleans is known for the food. On a rainy day, we suggest taking a food tour of the city. Pick a neighborhood or area and try a new restaurant you’ve never experienced. Pick a line of the streetcar and hop on and hop off between rain drops along all the shops and restaurants you can find. For those looking for a more vigorous option, head over to The Exchange Pickleball + Bar. Pickleball has become very popular over the last couple of years and The Exchange combines the sport with the fun.
