Time with Ya’Mama
Each year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, members of the Magazine Street Merchants’ Association (magazinestreet.com) join together to host a free champagne stroll whereby participating merchants remain open until 9 p.m. Many merchants use the opportunity to provide live entertainment, pour champagne and other libations, and roll out special offers, usually targeted to impress the ladies in our lives.
Apolline (4729 Magazine St., 894.8881, apollinerestaurant.com) will be open for the stroll. The popular Uptown Creole bistro recently rolled out its $35 Summer Prix Fixe, 3-course dinner menu:
Choice of appetizer: panzanella salad or tomato gazpacho
Choice of Entree: pan-roasted airline chicken breast, fingerling potatoes, yellow squash, scallions, chicken jus or grilled shrimp with speckled grits, tomatillos, shoshito peppers, corn, chimichurri
Choice of dessert: chocolate pôts de creme or seasonal sorbet.
Just steps off of Magazine Street, a bit further downtown, newly-opened The Good Shop (1114 Josephine St. 264.2478, thegoodshopneworleans.com), a collective of local companies bringing to New Orleans beautifully crafted, eco-friendly products (like hand-crafted ceramics from Portland and woven baskets from Morocco), will also be pouring the good stuff as they unveil a new retail space partnership with Fait NOLA.
FAIT (French for “he/she makes”), a partnership between Kathleen Robinson and her daughters Lauren and Emily Joffrion, is a mobile creative studio. The FAIT ladies bring exotic plants of all varieties to events everywhere welcoming all who are interested to board their truck/mobile solarium, Axil Rose, to set, arrange, mount, pot, and assemble plants in a way that reflects their unique creativity and tastes.
“Our studio (faitnola.com, @fait.nola) connects people to the exotic and promotes vibrant, organic living experiences through plant design and local craft,”said Robinson. “FAIT is about finding your creative source, getting your hands dirty, making the green things part of everyday life, and promoting the artistic energy of New Orleans. We also help you design your plant in a beautiful setting that is unique to your tastes, whether that’s helping you create a terrarium, mount a staghorn fern, or repot your plant in the perfect ceramic piece, both one-on-one and through workshops.”
THAT sounds like a very cool experience to share with your mom. Why give her flowers when you can share the experience of making something lasting together?
On Sunday, Fulton Alley (600 Fulton St., 679.7012, fultonalley.com) is inviting everyone to go “Bowling with Mom” with the offer of half-off bowling all-day for everyone in Mom’s group. Along with boutique bowling, the downtown funhouse has a game parlor that includes outdoor bocce ball, table shuffleboard, darts, ring toss and more activities guaranteed to bring on laughs and make memories. Also on special for the day is Board & Bottle for $37— a charcuterie board and bottle of house red or white wine.
Have a great weekend, everyone. Use it to celebrate the people and the community you love.
