While summer means a lot of fun in the sun, snoballs on the lakefront and backyard living, it is also the start of the dreaded hurricane season. The first day of June brought us into months of watching our favorite meteorologists waiting to see if anything suspicious enters the Gulf, while also making sure we have all of our ducks in a row ready for the just-in-case.
When preparing your home and family for hurricanes, it’s important to remember the furry members of our groups. I reached out to Elisabeth Ducoing, DVM, CVA, a veterinarian at Crescent City Vet, to get her insight into making sure everyone is ready for the chance of a hurricane.
How can pet owners prepare for a hurricane evacuation?
Preparation is key when it comes to hurricane season! Make sure your pet is up to date on all recommended vaccinations, and keep copies of vaccine records and important medical information in an easily accessible folder or digital format. Many veterinary clinics now offer online portals where records can be accessed remotely. Pets should always wear collars with current identification tags and be microchipped, as storms and evacuations can increase the risk of pets becoming separated from their families. Be sure to verify that your contact information in the microchip registry is current and accurate. Keeping recent photos of your pet on your phone can also be invaluable for identification and reunification if they become lost during an emergency.
It is also important to have a pet-friendly evacuation plan before a storm is approaching. Research pet-friendly hotels, shelters, or family and friends who may be able to accommodate your pet if evacuation becomes necessary. Additionally, pets should be comfortable spending time in a crate or carrier, since hotels, shelters, and emergency housing often require them. The middle of a hurricane evacuation is not the ideal time for your pet’s first experience in a crate or carrier, as it can add unnecessary stress and anxiety for both you and your pet.
If your pet experiences anxiety or motion sickness during travel, talk with your veterinarian before hurricane season about medications that may help make evacuation less stressful.
What should pet owners bring when evacuating?
Along with your pet, pack enough food, water, medications and supplies for at least several days. Bring vaccination and medical records, food and water bowls, a leash, carrier or crate, waste bags, bedding, and a few familiar toys or blankets to help reduce stress. Having a pet emergency kit prepared before a storm is approaching can save valuable time if an evacuation order is issued.
Do veterinary clinics remain open or board pets during hurricanes?
Every veterinary clinic or hospital has its own hurricane preparedness plan. Some may remain open or continue boarding services depending on the severity of the storm, while others may close to allow staff to evacuate safely. If you plan to board your pet during hurricane season, discuss your veterinary clinic’s emergency procedures ahead of time and provide an emergency contact who could retrieve your pet if necessary. Most veterinary clinics communicate updates through email, text messages, websites, or social media as weather conditions change.
