To Kill a Mockingbird Joins Forces With “One Book One New Orleans” To Raise Money For Literacy

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Broadway in New Orleans, presented by Entergy, and the Saenger Theatre have partnered with One Book One New Orleans to support literacy and community building in New Orleans. During the May 30 through June 4 performances of “To Kill a Mockingbird” at the Saenger Theatre, donation collection stations will be available at all bars, with cash options or QR codes for direct donations to One Book One New Orleans’ website.

Set in Alabama in 1934, Harper Lee’s enduring story of racial injustice and childhood innocence centers on one of the most venerated characters in American literature, small-town lawyer Atticus Finch. The play’s themes of justice, racial inequality, and the importance of empathy are particularly relevant to One Book One New Orleans’ mission to promote dialogue and understanding among diverse communities.

One Book One New Orleans is a community-based campaign that encourages residents of New Orleans to read the same book at the same time. The organization provides literacy resources to adults, fosters dialogue between diverse groups of people and offers quality community programming. Through partnerships with the Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans, Louisiana Books 2 Prisoners, and the Center for Educational Excellence in Alternative Settings, One Book One New Orleans provides copies of selected books and accompanying curriculums to adult education programs throughout the Greater New Orleans area, people in prisons throughout the southeast and teenagers in juvenile justice facilities.

“We are excited to partner with One Book One New Orleans to support their mission of promoting literacy and community building in New Orleans,” said Emily Walker, Director of Marketing for Broadway in New Orleans. “To Kill a Mockingbird is a powerful story that highlights the importance of empathy and understanding, and we hope that our patrons will join us in supporting this important cause.”
