Last week my five-year-old stared at me earnestly and said, “Mom, are you sad?” To which I replied, “No honey, I’m fine!” Then, with BIG eyes glued to my face, he responded, “No, mom I mean just the way your face is now.” Fake laughing through gritted teeth, I searched for a snarky response to counter this hostile affront and I came up empty. The kid had a point. Regardless of my fragile feelings (sad violin playing) or actual age (42), leave it to a 5-year-old to shoot you straight about how you look. Rather than wallow, I’ve decided to take this little discourse as the “intervention” that it was. A very needed, albeit unsolicited, reminder to get back on that post-summer self-care wagon.
Generally, I do all the things I’m supposed to do for my skin. I wear SPF, choose shady spots to sit in and get the occasional facial treatment. However, long summer days outside with kids coupled with the stress of the coronavirus and some Hurricane Ida aftermath sprinkled in, and my face appears to be aging in hyperspeed. What I really need is a ride on the skin Delorean back a good five years. But since I can’t currently swing that, I’m trying the next best things. I’ve rounded up tips, treatments (watch me get one live on Friday) and product recommendations for a post-summer skin glow from two of the top skin care experts in town. Now, here’s hoping I can get my 5-year-old to cut me a break.

Dr. Mara Haseltine, a board certified dermatologist and co-owner of Pure Dermatology, recommends the Diamond Glow facial, as well as the LaseMD Ultra. Lauren Trostorff, the owner of clean beauty and wellness shop Vibrant Market, recommends Ora Sun Kissed Supplement, a supplement designed to help rejuvenate sun-damaged skin and visibly reduce the appearance of discoloration caused by the sun. The olive extract sourced from Brazil has powerful antioxidants that help reduce the appearance of existing discoloration.
She also recommends the Linne Repair Face Oil, facial oil built with ingredients known to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and scars and encourage cellular regeneration. Sonam recommends this treatment because, “Fall is usually peel season as temperatures drop and skin is not exposed to a lot of heat and UV exposure is reduced.” The second recommendation is Stem Cell Microchanneling. According to Sonam, this is an advanced form of microneedling that creates small micro channels (or micro injuries) in the upper layers of the skin creating small micro injuries.
