Trixie Minx

Burlesque Producer and Performer Trixie Minx has been a dear friend of mine for more than a decade. I feel lucky to have watched her grow as a performer, manager and producer, and as a friend and as a person.

Her shows educate and inspire while they titillate; enlighten while they seduce. Together we created a cover feature (which I wrote and she embodied) on New Orleans Burlesque, which ran last September; web editor Kelly Massicot and I even took a class from her.

While her past is impressive, her future sparkles – and she’s very generous with the shine.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Doing what you love with people you respect and admire. Add good health and warm weather and you have a little slice of heaven.

What is your greatest fear?

Cockroaches! Anything that can lose its head and still live for days isn’t safe.

Which living person do you most admire?

Ashley Longshore; she’s truly inspirational.

What is your greatest daily (or almost daily) extravagance?

Cheese, and I do mean a lot of cheese.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

I’ve never been a fan of moderation.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Love comes to mind, but it’s because there’s so much to love all around.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Dance. It’s an ephemeral art that has the power to turn the human body into an instrument that paints stories, evokes emotion and truly proves our form is capable of much more than the limitations we put on ourselves

Which talent would you most like to have?

I wish I could play piano with my hands; currently I just play it with my derriere and it doesn’t have the best musical range.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Being an active integral member of the resurgence and evolution of New Orleans burlesque. I continue to strive for burlesque to be recognized as an art form with cultural significance and to work as an advocate for performer rights and healthcare.

Where would you most like to live?

I’m lucky to be living right where I want to be: New Orleans! I love Paris and Costa Rica, too, but I’ve yet to find another city in the world that has the unique blend of magic we have here.

What do you most value in your friends?

Loyalty and support. I’m lucky to have a wonderful circle of people in my world and we truly support each other in all our endeavors – through thick and thin.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

Fear. I have no fear on stage and wish I could carry that with me in every aspect of life.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Mean or deceptive behavior. There’s no need to be unkind to others. It’s disturbing when people push others down to get what they want; that’s a terrible foundation for any relationship

What restaurant do you find yourself recommending to friends lately?

N7 is a beautiful hidden gem in my neighborhood. And for those looking to go more casual I’m always up for the Slavic soul food at Kukhnya in Siberia. Cake Café for all your daytime pastry needs, too!

Describe your perfect New Orleans day?

The weather is perfect and I get to spend a lazy morning taking my dog to the park, followed by a long lunch with friends. The evening would be filled performing at one of my shows with my extended family of dancers, musicians and other general crazy sparkly folks. Of course we would end the night giggling with lots of champagne, cocktails and cheese!

What’s your favorite New Orleans story?

There are ton of great stories, but I really like the one I am creating now. It’s not done yet, but I promise it will be an amazing Louisiana fairytale.

Favorite thing to do in New Orleans during the summer?

Hanging out at the pool of souls!

What are you most looking forward to this fall?

I’ll be starting my 11th season of Fleur de Tease at One Eyed Jacks in addition to continuing my shows Burgundy Burlesque and Burlesque Ballroom. I have a bunch of really exciting projects in the works and while I can’t give you more details yet, know there’s a lot of sparkle to look forward to in the future.
