True to Your Heart
Local luncheon promotes healthy hearts.
The American Heart Association hosted the seventh annual Go Red for Women luncheon February 3 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel to raise awareness about the No. 1 killer of women in America. Heart disease takes the lives of more than half a million women each year, and stroke is the third-leading cause of death and No. 1 cause of serious and long-term disabilities.
The event, chaired by Barbara Turner Windhorst, kicked off with free health screenings and educational seminars.
Organizers also held a silent auction, with items like a French Quarter weekend package and Friends & Company Biwa pearl and pavé diamond earrings set in 18 karat white gold, to raise money for the group.
Later in the afternoon, the luncheon and fashion show began for guests who purchased tickets for $100. As guests dined on oven-baked chicken breast, horseradish infused mashed potatoes and other fine food provided by the hotel, local heart disease survivors and other notable New Orleans women – first lady Cheryl Landrieu and councilwoman Stacy Head to name a couple – walked the runway in fabulous red frocks provided by Chatta Box. WWL-TV’s Angela Hill emceed throughout the program.
Macy’s and Merck sponsored the event nationally, while local sponsors included Peoples Health, Paris Parker Salons & Spas, Chevron and Tulane Medical Center. The following day was National Wear Red Day, a way for everyone across the country to participate and support the fight against heart disease.
