Destinie Hammond is a Communications Associate at the Louisiana Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (LSPCA). In this podcast, Destinie talks about the organization's current animal population that is bursting at the seams. The shelter has an unusually large number of dogs and cats now, partly because of the time of year, and also as the result of an unusually high number of owner surrenders. Destinie explains why pet owners should have their dogs and cats spayed or neutered. She notes that in addition to controlling the animal population, the practice has other important benefits. During this podcast, we walked through the holding areas to say hello to a few dogs and cats. However, the shelter houses more than dogs and cats: Destinie introduced a Quaker Parrot who was in the shelter because he was unable to fly more than a few feet. These vivid green birds, also called Monk Parrots, are the lively parrots that inhabit trees in many New Orleans’ neighborhoods. Finally, Destinie talked about the grand opening of the new adoption resource center and clinic that is scheduled for later on this fall.
