Do your clothes hang out? I bet you’ve never asked yourself this question, but maybe you should. While attempting to purge my closet of its spring and summer outcasts (aka things I bought and now hate), I realized, the colors, styles and even time periods were ALL over the place. If my closet was a party, it would be awkward. No one would have much in common. Their only mutual friend? Underwear. Then, I stumbled on this quote from Substack and became motivated to change my shopping habits, “People think they need more storage, but they really need more cohesion. If your clothes don’t talk to each other, they’re just strangers awkwardly hanging out.” Wow. My clothes have been barely hanging out together like its a 6th grade dance when they could be wining and dining together on a European vacation.
So how do you remedy this dire social situation? I decided to start with color, removing past seasons’ pieces in trendy colors that never really worked for me (I’m looking at you canary yellow). This has been a huge help. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve naturally gravitated toward a warmer, more neutral palette with creams, browns, and everything in between. So I’m doubling down on those. Lucky for me, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2025 is Mocha Mousse, a rich, grounded tone that feels both timeless and wearable. Plenty of cute clothing options in those tones right now. I’m hoping this small shift in colors will shuffle out some of the rainbow chaos and leave me with solid staples.
Now, no one has the time, money or energy to acquire an entirely new wardrobe for this but for an efficient start you could stop by tomorrow’s Real Real event at Angelique boutique and buy classic, pre-loved items while simultaneously ridding yourself of some of your quality pieces that no longer work for you. According to The Real Real, “ We all make fashion mistakes. But someone out there wants what you don’t.” Exactly.
You can also grab some new, chic pieces for yourself. Here are some of the pretty Mocha Mousse items I might incorporate into my closet in hopes of elevating closet morale! They don’t all have to be best friends but let’s hope at the very least they sometimes hang out.
