Voodoo Fest Daily Recommendations

Voodoo Fest

Halloween in New Orleans brings with it the return of Voodoo to the Festival Grounds at City Park.  This year the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience arrives tomorrow and extends through the weekend.  Here are some recommendations to get the most out of your weekend.

Friday:

If you’re heading in early check out Flint Eastwood at the Music Den.  The Detroit native presents an explosive set of powerful indie blend of pop and hip-hop.  I caught this show at Roo over the summer it is well worth getting there a bit early.  Follow that up with local funksters Flow Tribe over at the South Course.   Psychedelic soul ensemble Chicano Batman is over at the Music Den at 4 p.m.  From here there is a pretty clear course from Benjamin Booker’s blues to LCD Soundsystem and their fantastic new music with Kendrick Lamar to close out the night.  Lamar’s recent record Damn will without question be at or near the top of my best of list for the year.

Saturday:

Start the day with the psychedelic rock of The Black Angels at the Altar.  Power rock trio The Power Company will be on the South Course.  At 6:30 p.m., Chicago based indie folks—Whitney will be at the South Course.  Make sure to catch this one.  Whitney released one of my favorite records of last year.  Wind out the evening with RL Grime and the Foo Fighters.  It seems like Dave Grohl and company have been in constant motion this year.  Their momentum is overwhelming.

Sunday:

Early Sunday you have two chances to catch the indie folk of Strand of Oaks follow them up with the Cold War Kids over at the Altar.  Check out British singer James Hunter with his group on the South Course.  Hunter has a really excellent bluesy sound.  Close out the night with the one-two-three of indie folk from The Head and the Heart followed by the experimental hip-hop of Post Malone and end good old fashioned alt rock set from The Killers.

On the whole, this is a solidly diverse year for Voodoo.  There is a little bit of something for everyone and each night is capped with some truly fantastic headliners.  Stay tuned for updates as the festival progresses.
