NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Washington Mardi Gras King Rico Alvendia, together with Washington Mardi Gras Chairman Congressman Troy Carter, officially announced the theme of his reign “Duty, Honor, Louisiana” – a salute to America’s military, veterans and first responders. This year, the Mystick Krewe of Louisianans, will honor the unwavering commitment of these men and women while showcasing Louisiana’s unique culture.
It was shared in a release that through the theme, “Duty, Honor, Louisiana,” King Alvendia seeks to bring all Americans together in a show of unity and gratitude to members of the United States armed forces. The theme is especially timely as Washington Mardi Gras festivities begin the same week as the presidential inauguration.
As part of the festivities, King Alvendia is hosting a USO concert to be headlined by a major country music artist, with special performances by the renowned West Point Band and local bands from Edna Karr and L.B. Landry high schools. The concert will celebrate service members and their families.
“As an Iraq War veteran, I have consistently sought ways to give back to our country and my fellow veterans,” said Washington Mardi Gras King Rico Alvendia in the announcement. “Over the years, we’ve found Mardi Gras to be an excellent time to celebrate both our local culture and our local heroes, first, through the creation of the Legion of Mars, New Orleans’ only Mardi Gras parade with a membership comprised of active duty and veteran military and first responders, and now through Washington Mardi Gras. With this USO concert, we will unite everyone in attendance regardless of political affiliation with love for our country and gratitude for America’s heroes.”
Additionally, the Love One Louisiana Foundation, a charitable organization headed by Louisiana’s First Lady Sharon Landry, is stepping forward to sponsor the participation of members of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) in the wake of the horrific terrorist attack in New Orleans. These officers will join in the USO concert and other Washington Mardi Gras festivities as a gesture of appreciation for their extraordinary service and commitment to the community.
“Following the tragedy in New Orleans, King Rico’s theme for Washington Mardi Gras offers a meaningful opportunity to honor the bravery and commitment of our local heroes who selflessly rushed into danger to save lives in the early hours of New Year’s Day,” said First Lady Sharon Landry. “These individuals risk their lives daily to protect our community, and we are proud to express our gratitude by celebrating them during this year’s Washington Mardi Gras events.”
To extend his commitment to the values of his chosen theme, the 2025 King’s charity for the week of Washington Mardi Gras is the Mars Hero Fund, which benefits Active Duty, Veteran Military or First Responders by covering all expenses associated with riding in the Legion of Mars Parade and other charitable events throughout the year, including a Veterans Day meal at the New Orleans VA hospital.
“This year in DC, our Washington Mardi Gras Chairman Troy Carter and I invite everyone to join us in celebrating the people who keep us safe – our troops and police, overseas and at home, who have given so much to protect our lives and our freedom,” said Alvendia. “While nothing can fully repay them, I hope this recognition and the work we do with the Mars Hero Fund helps them in a meaningful way.”
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Alvendia served for 25 years as an officer in the U.S. Army JAG Corps and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service during combat operations in Iraq. In 2012, Alvendia co-founded the Legion of Mars which has helped thousands of military veterans and their families throughout Louisiana during financial hardships and while deployed in service to the country.
