Wediquette Wednesday: Are vendor meals included in the catering budget?

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. This week, we’re answering a common question about feeding your wedding vendors.

Question: We’re planning to have a small reception with about 75 guests. Are vendor meals included in the catering budget? If not, how do I know who to cover and how to make sure it happens?

Answer: Way to think ahead when it comes to hidden costs. Yes, it’s customary to pay for your vendors to eat. The planner, photographer, DJ, videographer, band and their respective assistants are working long, hard hours to make your Big Day a success, so be sure to feed them to keep their spirits and energy up. Talk to your caterer about the vendor headcount. Some caterers even offer discounts for vendor meals or wave the charge, so it’s worth it to add that to your list of questions during negotiations. If possible, find a quiet room or area where the vendors can eat away from distractions and guest questions, to ensure they get a real break.
