Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)
Question: A friend of the family just got engaged and I was invited to the engagement party. I’ll also be included in at least one shower, the bachelorette party and the wedding. I’ll of course bring a gift to the showers and bachelorette and buy a wedding gift. I wasn’t sure about the engagement party though. Are you supposed to bring a separate gift to the engagement party?
Answer: It’s of course always a lovely gesture to give an engagement gift, but it isn’t a requirement. If it’s in your budget and you want to do it, go for it. Just be sure to send it in advance so the couple doesn’t have to deal with hauling it home.
