Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. This week, we’re talking about holiday engagement parties.
Question: My boyfriend and I just got engaged. We think it would be so much fun to have the engagement party on New Year’s Eve. Can an engagement party be on a holiday?
Answer: Congratulations on your engagement. A New Year’s Eve engagement party sounds festive and like loads of fun. There’s no rule against having your engagement party — or even your wedding for that matter — on a holiday. Just keep in mind that some friends and family members may have long-standing plans, traditions and commitments, such as annual vacations, built around various holidays and may not be able to attend your soirée. It’s fine to be disappointed if someone close to you has to decline, but no hard feelings if your aunt, uncle and cousins have their yearly Christmas and New Year’s trip to the mountains bought, paid for and on the books and must R.S.V.P. with regrets. Tell them you understand and that you and your soon-to-be new hubby look forward to celebrating with them at the wedding.
