Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)
Question: I’m going to a super casual afternoon house party reception. The skirt I want to wear has black and white stripes and the top is black. My shoes are pink. Can I wear something with white in it to a reception?
Answer: A little bit of white is fine, especially paired with additional colors. The pop of color in your shoes is a great idea. You might want to add even more colorful accessories, in addition to your pink shoes, to play down the white and to keep the black from making you appear too somber. But it sounds like you are on the right track. The rule of thumb is to avoid wearing all white or mostly white, otherwise it can seem you are trying to upstage the bride, but a skirt with white stripes won’t send the wrong message.
