Wediquette Wednesday: Do I still give a gift if I was cut from the wedding due to COVID restrictions?

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question: My friends have had to reduce their guest list due to COVID restrictions so I have been uninvited. How do I handle the gift? Do I still give them a gift?
I certainly do not want to create any awkwardness but I do want to recognize and support them as they begin their life together.

Answer: This can’t have been an easy decision for the couple. The wedding they planned has taken on a completely different look and they are making the best of it. Moving ahead with the gift, along with a heartfelt message of understanding, compassion and well-wishes on the card will go a long way in curbing any awkwardness.
