Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)
Question: My fiancé and I are keeping our wedding very short and simple. Do we have to have a bridal party?
Answer: The short answer is no. The slightly longer answer is legally — according to section 9: 244 of the Louisiana marriage statute — ‘The marriage ceremony shall be performed in the presence of two competent witnesses of full age’ and they must sign the required documents, but as long as they witness the ceremony, they don’t literally have to stand, or wear a certain outfit or perform any other duties.
