Wediquette Wednesday: For a delayed reception, do I send the gift now or wait until November?

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question: Last year, our niece planned a May 2020 wedding. Then the pandemic hit and we received a change of date card for November 2020, some time in April. A week before the original May date, her mom tells us there will be a home wedding on that date which a lot of friends and family watched on Zoom. It was lovely. Some relatives discussed seeing everyone at the reception in November. My question is: Do I send the gift now or wait until November?

Answer: It is acceptable to send now or wait until November for the reception. It’s entirely up to you. That said, if your gift is something the couple might need now that they are officially married, I’m sure they would welcome it earlier rather than later.
