Wediquette Wednesday: How can I get guests to dress in formal attire for my wedding?

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question: My fiancé and I have our heart set on an elegant and formal black tie wedding. Our dream is to make it a special, romantic evening for us and our guests, with everyone dressed to the nines. How can I get guests to dress in formal attire for my wedding?

Answer: Most guests will be happy to oblige your requests. That said, formal attire, even when rented, can be a little pricy. Allow for your guests to work within their budget by putting “black tie optional” on your save-the-dates and invitations, rather than “formal attire.” This indicates to guests that in addition to tuxedos and gowns, dark suits and cocktail dresses are also appropriate attire for the evening.
