Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question: My wife and I are on a tight budget right now. How much is too cheap for a wedding gift?

Answer: Conventionally, you would try to estimate the cost to the couple for having you at the reception. This is not always possible for many however, because salary, life events, age and countless other factors that can affect finances come into play. So, if you can’t do the former, go with whatever fits your budget. The couple should be inviting you to the wedding because they want you to share in their Big Day and support their marriage, not so they can get a gift.
