Wediquette Wednesday: How soon and with what frequency should we contact wedding guests with COVID-related updates?

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question: My wedding is in September. Due to the Delta variant and low COVID-19 vaccination numbers in my area, we’re back to a mask mandate. I’m convinced that we are also headed back to tighter restrictions on gatherings and maybe even another lockdown. How soon and with what frequency should we contact wedding guests with COVID-related updates?

Answer: It’s good that you are thinking ahead and putting safety first. Health officials are saying the Delta variant is highly contagious, aggressive and affecting much younger people than prior variants of the virus. Weekly updates to your guests should be sufficient and not too spammy. Keep the message focused on mandates in your area, on what guests can expect and how best for them to prepare. That said, consider purchasing masks in bulk to make available to anyone who forgets to bring one.
