Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)
Question: I’m attending a wedding as a guest in a few weeks and have a question. Is it OK for guests to request music at a wedding reception?
Answer: Absolutely! Keep in mind that the couple may have a set playlist; a group of off limits songs; or a certain genre that has been eliminated from the repertoire for the band or DJ. If that’s the case, your request may not be fulfilled, but there is no rule against making one. A note to couples: Try to offer a variety of genres and artists for your guests, since wedding receptions are usually made up of all ages and musical preferences. It’s all about promoting a fun, dance-filled atmosphere for your guests.
