Week of Jan. 13: King Cakes, Cheese Classes and Blood Drives

King Cake Fe(a)st is back with its first Carnival event of the season this Thursday, Jan. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Oak and Ale. Stop by to enjoy king cakes by the slice (so you can try lots of different kinds!) plus Carnival artists and creators. And be sure to follow the Fe(a)st on social media for more pop-ups through the season.

Looking for a king cake that is a little different? Check out the Crescent City Farmers Market’s 2025 King Cake Guide, featuring some of the market’s wide array of small batch bakers from across the area. We can’t wait to sample some of these outside the box flavors: strawberry matcha, satsuma dreamsicle, and Bavarian cream. We wouldn’t mind getting the baby if it means enjoying more of these fresh flavors. Visit the markets on Tuesday Uptown, Thursday in Mid-City and Sunday in City Park.

St. James Cheese Company just announced their line-up of cheese classes, with three interactive opportunities to learn about cheese and much more this month. “Cheese ABCs” and “What’s in a Name?” will feature lessons and wine pairings, and “Dry Cheese Pairing” will feature a selection of cheese plus accompanying non-alcoholic options. Time to get cheesy!

If king cakes aren’t your “thing,” but you’re still looking for something sweet, The Station in Mid-City has you covered with a special Mardi Gras tea cookie decorating class this Friday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. There will be snacks, plus attendees can BYOB if desired.

Give back and celebrate life this Saturday, Jan. 18, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bywater Bakery for a special Carnival season blood drive. Be sure to book early. The first 25 donors to book a spot will receive a free king cake.

For aspiring home bakers, Bayou Saint Cake has a yummy online class with an exclusive recipe with all of the how-to’s to make your own king cake this season. Writer and baker Bronwen Wyatt walks you through a complete set of steps from proofing to baking, decorating and more.
