Week of Jan. 6: Phunny Phorty Phellows, King Cake and the Start to Carnival

Carnival kicks off tonight with the rolling of the Phunny Phorty Phellows at 7 p.m., followed by the Funky Uptown Krewe with the theme “Studio 504,” along the Uptown St. Charles Avenue streetcar route (originating at the Willow St. and S. Carrollton Avenue Station). Downtown, the Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc will celebrate Twelfth Night as well as the krewe’s namesake’s birthday, starting at 8 p.m. at French Market Place.

Carnival season is here! Jazz up your home with an official Carnival flower from the artists at Stronghold Studios (known for their fun and festive house float displays across the city). Every Friday and Saturday in Jan. 12 to 6 p.m., the studio will open its doors for flower sales, available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors.

The King Cake Hub returns today at Zony Mash! The one-stop-hub will be open daily with more than 70 varieties of king cakes, desserts, treats and more to get your Carnival off deliciously.

In the French Quarter, the Historic New Orleans Collection’s Shop at the Collection will celebrate the kick-off of Carnival from 1 to 3 p.m. with live music, entertainment and plenty of king cakes to sample. Free and open to the public.

It’s been a tough week for the city of New Orleans. We continue to pray for those impacted by the New Year’s Day violence and stand together with our beloved community.
