Week of May 1: Jazz Fest, Bookstore Crawl and Cinco de Mayo

The first weekend of Jazz Fest was beautiful.

If you are still looking for accessories to fill out your look, or need last minute festival friendly gear, Massey’s Outfitters has a wide selection of sunglasses, hats, rain gear, coolers and more. And, located in Mid-City, they are a quick stop on your way to the Fairgrounds.

Massey’s also has my personal favorite brand of sunglasses, Goodr. I love them because they were originally made for runners, with a lightweight, bounce-free design. But they kept me hanging on with their cool designs, wide range of colors and collabs, and eco-friendly options like these made from 100% recycled materials. They are great for not only Jazz Fest, but also for the upcoming Bayou Boogaloo, crawfish boils and picnics, summer sports and outdoor activities throughout the year.

Although Independent Bookstore Day has just passed (April 29) there’s still time to patronize your favorite spots around town, get to know new places and be entered to win big rewards. This year’s “Bookstore Crawl” (April 29 through May 13) highlights seven local booksellers with a special bookstore “passport.” Simply pick up a passport from any of the seven locations, get a stamp and turn it in to your last location to be entered to win $25 gift cards from each spot. Participating stores are Baldwin & Co., Blue Cypress Books, Community Book Center, Frenchman Art and Books, Garden District Book Shop, Octavia Books and Tubby & Coo’s. It’s a win win for book worms!

Cinco de Mayo is this Friday. There are so many great places to celebrate, there’s just too many to list them all. Some of my favorites include the fresh ceviche specials at Val’s on Freret Street. The amazing Oaxacan menu at El Pavo Real in Broadmoor (plus watermelon margaritas, heck yeah!). Juan’s Flying Burrito’s has one of my go-to veggie favorites, the Mardi Gras Indian tacos, full of lots of veggies and flavor. Felipe’s Taqueria makes all of their items fresh each morning, and if you haven’t had their “Baja” sauce, you are missing out. Plus, they will be celebrating with live music and specials at each loation. Barracuda on Tchoupitoulas remains a fan favorite for all as well. Check out their fresh strawberry margs plus some deluxe nachos to share (or not). What’s your favorite spot to celebrate?
