Week of October 16: Bookstores, Art Markets and Halloween Trivia

Independent bookstores are hopping with plenty of things to do all week and weekend. From spooky stories to cooking and best-selling author events, there’s something for everyone.

Blue Cypress Books on Oak Street is hosting “An Evening of Scary Stories with Claudia Gray,” on Tuesday, October 17 at 6 p.m. Readings will include family-friendly storytelling, spooky selections by Claudia Gray from her book “The Haunted Mansion: Storm & Shade,” a book signing, refreshments and more. Booksellers Baldwin & Co. and Octavia Books have partnered with the New Orleans Book Festival at Tulane University for a special author event with writers Walter Isaacson and Michael Lewis on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at McAlister Auditorium. The evening will include a discussion of their latest books, “Elon Musk” (Isaacson) and “Going Infinite” (Lewis), as well as hot button topics such as what it means to be an innovator and a leader today. Foodies and cookbook fans will want to head over to The Garden District Book Shop on Friday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. for a presentation by New York Times best-selling cookbook writer and celebrity chef Joshua Weissman. Known for his insanely popular and approachable YouTube cooking series, Weissman is celebrating the release of his second cookbook, “Joshua Weissman: Texture Over Taste,” which explores the elements of flavor and textures. Art Market

The Art Market at Bayou Gardens is back this Sunday, Oct. 22, from noon to 5 p.m. Located in the outdoor area between Bayou Beer Garden and Bayou Wine Garden, the event will take advantage of the great fall weather with vendors and local artists featuring vintage clothing, jewelry, plant sales, glitter, food and much more. Trampled Rose Rescue will also be hosting a pet adoption and a raffle basket from the vendors benefitting the rescue.

Halloween Trivia (and more)

Also on Sunday, local distiller 504 Rum is hosting “Hocus Pocus” trivia event in their tasting room as well starting at 3:30 p.m. There will be trivia and prizes, tasty cocktails, a food truck, glitter bar and much more, just in time for Halloween season.
