It’s a touchy topic that’s been buzzing lately – GLP-1 weight loss drugs. Whether it’s over coffee or while scrolling through your social feed, you’ve probably heard of names like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro. In this month’s Wellness column, we’ll cover what these drugs are all about, who’s using them, and what you should know if you’re considering using these.
Keep in mind, we have a relatively limited space here to explore such a vast topic. If you’re interested in a deeper dive, I have three full podcast episodes dedicated to injectable weight loss drugs, including interviews with a pharmacist and an OB-gyn; find these on FUELED wellness + nutrition wherever you listen to podcasts.
What are GLP-1s?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a natural hormone produced by our bodies that helps to regulate appetite and blood sugar levels. Weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro contain synthetic compounds that mimic this GLP-1 hormone, which is what appears to make these medications so powerfully effective.
The Rising Popularity of GLP-1s
Initially developed to help people manage diabetes, these injectable medications are now being prescribed for weight loss as well – often for people struggling with obesity or significant weight-related health risks like hypertension, sleep apnea, joint pain and more. There’s also a significant and growing number of people who turn to these drugs for what I refer to as ‘vanity pounds’ – typically a relatively healthy person with maybe an extra 10 or 20 pounds they’d like to lose, but nothing that’s posing any notable health risks.
Beyond Weight Loss: The Unexpected Perks
The potential benefits of GLP-1s extend beyond just shedding pounds. Recent approvals by the FDA, for example, allow drugs like Wegovy to claim they can reduce the risk of heart problems. And researchers are currently exploring other possible far-reaching benefits of GLP-1 drugs, including improvements in conditions like inflammation, sleep apnea and liver disease.
Is there a catch?
While GLP-1s can be game changers, they also come with their fair share of baggage. Common side effects include nausea and digestive issues, and these weight loss drugs have also been linked to more serious concerns like thyroid tumors (including cancer) and pancreatitis – not to be taken lightly, especially considering that these are typically ‘forever drugs’, meaning that you’ll need to stay on these drugs indefinitely to continue to experience the benefits.
The cost of commitment
Another considerable factor is the cost—these medications can be incredibly expensive, often not covered by insurance unless you have diabetes, and can set you back as much as $600 to $1200 a month.
This leads us to some bigger questions about who gets access to these drugs and why. It’s a sticky issue, steeped in social and ethical considerations. The conversation often turns to the broader implications for body image and societal pressures to look a certain way. Plus, with such a high cost, not everyone who might truly benefit from these drugs can afford them.
For those considering GLP-1s…
These aren’t just any weight loss solution; they’re powerful medications with serious implications. If you’re contemplating taking one of these GLP-1 injectable weight loss drugs, make sure you think it through carefully, considering all aspects of commitment.
Talk with a trusted physician or healthcare provider (ideally a provider not impacted financially by your decision). Weigh the potential benefits against the known risks and costs. Consider your health goals and your personal motivations. Are you dealing with significant health concerns related to excess weight, or are you simply chasing those last few vanity pounds? Answering these questions as honestly as possible will help to guide your decision.
Deciding whether to commit to GLP-1 injections is no small matter and could be a life-long decision. I encourage you to gather as much knowledge and support as possible so that you can make an informed choice that aligns with your priorities of wellness and happiness. Your health journey is uniquely yours, and I’m here to help you navigate it with all the care and support possible.
