Next in the lineup of quality stand-up comedy hitting New Orleans this summer, W. Kamau Bell, host of the FX series “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell,” performs tonight at the Howlin’ Wolf along with Guy Branum, Janine Brito and Hari Kondabolu. “Totally Biased” combines topical humor with sketch comedy and is produced by Chris Rock, who became a fan of Bell after seeing his one-man show “The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About An Hour.” Info here.

 

9th Ward Opera Company, a group aimed at providing opportunities for young singers, performs the rarely staged short Gershwin opera Blue Monday and An Embarrassing Position, an opera by Xavier University professor Dan Shore, creator of Freedom Ride. The group performs at the Marigny Opera House, a unique space that was once the Holy Trinity Church. Info here.

Loyola University hosts the New Orleans Piano Institute and Keyboard Festival, which features master classes, lectures and recitals presented by the Musical Arts Society of New Orleans. Competition rounds, master classes and lectures are free; recital admission ranges from $5 for students to $50 for ticket packages. Info here.

Saturday, July 27

A change of tune from the ubiquitous walk-a-thon or 5K, the environmental nonprofit Louisiana Bucket Brigade hosts its annual “Stomp Out the Stink” dance-a-thon. Dancers can sign up as individuals or on a team and then participate in the 12-hour event featuring dance lessons, live music, food and prizes. Info here.
