For 55 years, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has been one of New Orleans’ leading attractions. For two weekends each year, huge names in the music industry are added alongside local artists to complete an unforgettable music experience. In addition, artists from around the country flock to the grounds to share their art in the form of sculpture, clothing, jewelry and paintings you can take home with you right from the festival.
Though there are many dreamy aspects to this festival, it’s late April and early May dates can bring a host of problems like sun, heat and rain. This week, the entire staff of Renaissance Publishing was surveyed to get their best insider tips for navigating Jazz Fest successfully.
I like to pack my own toilet paper in a Ziploc bag. Then, if you have leftovers you want to bring home, ditch the tp and you have something to pack your goodies in. It also helps in case it rains and you want to protect your phone from water. – Ashley McLellan, Editor New Orleans Magazine/New Orleans Homes
I’ve learned to bring sunscreen and toilet paper but also to wear light clothing that covers all of my skin. I no longer mess around. My favorite tip is to find shade and a spot to chill at the Langiappe stage. This year, I’m looking forward to so many acts, but excited to take my daughter to see Kacey Musgraves for her birthday. – Andy Myer, Editor St. Charles Avenue/New Orleans Bride
Big hat. Spray bottle with a fan. Hydrate! It’s gonna be a hot one this weekend. Mango freeze on IV. – Kim Singletary, Editor Biz New Orleans
If you really want to fest with the best, make sure your group has a flag pole for your designated spot (or be near a distinct flag as a reference point). Plus the other essentials mentioned like hand sanitizer, sunscreen, sunglasses and water! – Kelly Massicot, Digital Editor
Be prepared for any weather with rain boots for the mud, a clear poncho, sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, and something to cover your arms. Some vendors will let you buy ice. Bring koozies. – Kate Henry, VP Sales and Marketing
Wear a hat, any hat, always! Bring sunscreen and hand sanitizer. I’m most looking forward to Dave Matthews Band and eating crawfish bread! – Lauren McCanse, Sales
Clothes with pockets so you can keep your hands free for food and drinks! Don’t stress about getting a good spot so much that you don’t enjoy the moment. – Ali Sullivan, Art Director
Reusable water bottle is a must. This year, I’m excited to eat a Cochon de lait po-boy and to see Laufey the 2nd weekend! – Abby Palopoli, Sales
Closed-toe shoes. Limber hips. Only eat half a red Sno-Ball. – Kelly Hite, Associate News Editor BizNewOrleans.com
Must haves: Therapeutic shoes, sanitizer, spray or powder sunscreen so you don’t have to touch your face after touching everything at JF, waist bag or fanny pack and no purses! – Erin Chiartano, Sales
Just put your hair up and wear sunglasses! No need for a blow out and a full face of makeup. A mini handheld fan that sprays water would be nice on a super hot day! – Greer Stewart, Marketing Manager
Is it too late to advise people to bury a handle of whiskey on the parade grounds and dig it up day of? – Jeremy Marshall, Sponsored Content
