What's In Tune This Week

OHMME and People Museum at Gasa Tonight

Tonight is a great one-two of performers at Gasa Gasa.  Things start with local alt-pop duo People Museum.  I dig this pair quite a bit.  They combine the best of the contemporary pop scene with a distinctly local horn flair.  Their debut record will be out at the end of the month and I’ll have an interview with them soon but until then you’ll definitely want to check out this show.  Check out “Eye 2 Eye” below.  After People Museum art and experimental rock due OHMME will take the stage.  I am very excited about this show.  OHMME is Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart who build remarkably intricate harmonies to match the complex construction of their songs.  Their debut record Parts is already one of my favorite records of the year.  Check out the video for “Icon” below and tell me you can get this song out of your head.  There is a deep understanding of what pop should sound like here but without resorting to the expected.

Punch Brothers and Madison Cunningham at the Civic Wednesday

On Wednesday night there is a seriously excellent evening of music to be had.  Madison Cunningham kicks things off with her remarkably resonant songwriting.  Her voice and stylistic guitar keep you fully engaged with these stories as they unfold.  You’ll want to catch this remarkable newcomer.  Check out the track “All at Once” below.  Cunningham is followed by the incomparable Punch Brothers who are touring on their fifth record All Ashore.  Taking a brief break from his role as the impresario of NPR’s Live From Here, Chris Thile takes the reigns of one of the best indie bluegrass combos ever.  This new record is experimental and playful without losing the accessibility that really makes the Punch Brothers unique.  This is music for everyone that is seemingly effortless in its construction and performance.  Check out the video for “Jumbo” below.

Moon River Fest

This weekend Moon River Festival returns to Coolidge Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  I’ve been keeping my eye on this festival for a few years now and this year’s lineup is an absolute gem featuring:  The Avett Brothers, The Head and the Heart, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, Judah & The Lion, Trampled By Turtles, Margo Price, Mavis Staples, I'm With Her, The Dirty Guv'nahs, Joseph, The Secret Sisters.  This year’s festival is sold out I’m sure we’ll see a number of great performances leak out onto the web this week.  If you’re looking for an alternative to the annual Labor Day trip down to the beach this may be just the thing for next year.
