It’s rare to hear fair trade listed as a top priority in most shops. But for Gigi, owner of the online and wholesale store Voyage, it’s a key value. The term “fair trade” is thrown around a lot, but if you’re not exactly sure what it means, you’re not alone. And you may be missing the good you’re doing, while you are doing it! As you might have inferred, fair trademarked products represent a commitment to ensuring that they were made under fair conditions. But more expansively, it means that ethical labor practices, environmental considerations and fair wages were prioritized by the producer. Ideally, all of these ideals are met, but not always.

As I mentioned, Gigi, originally from France and still a practicing lawyer, admires the core values behind fair trade production. And even more so, she loves to travel. With family roots in both Colombia and Morocco, she jumps at the chance to source unique, handcrafted, small-batch goods from these regions. After closing her brick-and-mortar shop on Magazine Street several years back, she decided to sell her thoughtfully chosen home goods (planters, blankets, pillows, glassware etc.), through her Etsy shop and at local retailers including Iris 1956, Harrold’s, and Merchant House.
The timely news this week? Voyage is hosting an in-person warehouse sale. Everything from Moroccan tile fountains, terra cotta planters, and handwoven baskets will be available at 50–75% off. So, if you haven’t discovered her shop yet or just love a great deal, this sale is for you. Bonus, muralist and upcycling creator @liz_kamarul will be on hand selling one-of-a-kind goods.
