Dr. Mary Killackey

As Chair and Professor in the Department of Surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Mary Killackey has worked for decades to expand opportunities for women in medicine, serving as a model of success and advancement for others to follow. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Killackey came to New Orleans to assist in the city’s recovery, filling a critical void left by evacuating physicians. Specializing in liver and kidney transplantation, she deeply values the long-term relationships she forms with her patients, many of whom remain connected to her for years.

Ten years ago, Dr. Killackey had the honor of being tasked with leading the Tulane Surgery Department. Since then, she has reshaped the department into an environment centered on mentorship, balance, and opportunity. Both at home and nationally, she has remained dedicated to developing leaders, with a particular focus on opening doors for women in leadership roles.

Dr. Killackey exemplifies the belief that physicians are at their best when dedication to their careers and devotion to their families can coexist.
