The New Orleans Women & Children’s Shelter (NOWCS) sees firsthand that homelessness does not always look like someone sleeping outside. For many women and children, it looks like a mother sleeping in her car, staying temporarily with relatives, fleeing an unsafe relationship, or doing everything she can to keep her children stable while having nowhere permanent to go.
Dawn Bradley-Fletcher, CEO of NOWCS, is responding to this growing crisis with action. This work includes a new Mid-City facility, which provides comprehensive services for families all under one roof.
“Our goal is to make sure families are not only housed, but truly supported,” says Bradley-Fletcher. “We want mothers, children, fathers, and entire families to leave NOWCS with more than a roof over their heads. We want them to leave with stability, confidence, resources, and a real path forward.”
While the community can always support NOWCS through financial donations and volunteering, awareness and empathy are among the most powerful tools for change. Homelessness is not a personal failure; it is often the result of crisis, instability, and circumstances that could impact anyone. By helping the community better understand this reality, NOWCS hopes to build stronger advocates, better neighbors, and a more compassionate New Orleans.
