This week, the editors and Renaissance Publishing staff are sharing a few of their Mardi Gras and Carnival do’s and don’ts when it comes to parading on The Avenue, downtown, in the French Quarter or beyond. From simply being nice to those around your parading spot or knowing that no one local actually “flashes” for beads, we’ve got you covered.
DO
Keep your cool. Don’t get grabby with the beads. There are plenty to go around, and most locals don’t want to bring beads home.
Plan ahead and pace yourself. It’s a marathon, not a spring.
Play Nice. Carnival is for young people, old people, families and friends; remember to be nice and work together and make things fun for everyone.
Remember you’re in public spaces. Sidewalks and neutral grounds are public spaces. We’re all fine with you setting up a space to entertain, but keep others in mind. People will inevitably have to walk through your space to get to where they need to go. Don’t make that an issue.
Back up for the band. Just do it. Or else.
Let your generosity flow. Offer someone standing next to you a bottle of water or a throw they almost caught.
Plan parking. Get to the route early and leave early to avoid the worst traffic.
DON’T
Please do not ask people to “flash” for beads. We don’t do that here.
NEVER compete with a child for beads or throws. There will be plenty more coming your way and that kind of behavior is inexcusable.
Don’t act aggressive. In restaurants, bars and other public spaces you will simply need to be patient when waiting for the restroom. Always knock before you aggressively keep trying to open the door. Common courtesy matters.
Don’t fight over spots or throws or get in other’s personal space.
Eat king cake like they did on ESPN.
