You Got to Have Faith

On Nov. 17, the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel was the site of the black-tie “Southern Dominican Gala,” at which more than 250 guests enjoyed cocktails, a silent auction, dancing, a seated gourmet dinner and the presentation of the St. Martin de Porres award. The event raises money to support the Southern Dominican Province’s ministries, the education of young men studying to enter priesthood and religious life, and the care of the beloved elderly friars. The event was chaired by Mrs. Basil Rusovich and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nuzum.

Bruce Giaimo played the piano during the cocktail hour, then Fred Tassin’s band entertained through dinner, which was catered by the hotel. The tables’ centerpieces were orchid plants flown in from Hawaii and were donated by Max Mipro. A stunning antique Spanish Madonna was sold at the auction, along with a diamond and gold fleur-de-lis pendant and chain, original stained glass pieces, gift certificates to local hotels and restaurants, and art work, including paintings by Fr. Val McInnes. Drs. Haydee and Nicolas Bazan and Drs. Marguerite McDonald and Stephen Klyce were the recipients of the St. Martin de Porres award, which is given annually to one or two individuals or couples in recognition of their deep faith and demonstration of love of family, church and community.
