Your Guide to Summer Swim Lessons for All Ages

As the weather heats up, New Orleans turns to water for respite, and fortunately, there is no shortage of natural and man-made options for taking the plunge.

As we all know too well, however, water is not without its dangers, especially for the smaller ones among us. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children age 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of death for ages 5 to 14.

In Louisiana, the risks are even higher. While the national average is 1.31 deaths per 100,000 people due to drowning, in Louisiana it’s 2.31. Our state has the highest drowning rates for children in the country, with most of those deaths occurring in swimming pools.

Ironically, our area pools are also the source of lifesaving swimming lessons, and here, again, there are plenty of options.

Lakeview resident Roxanne Avila started her daughter, Phoenix, in lessons at the UNO Recreation and Fitness Center at just 18 months old.

“My husband actually never learned to swim, and we’ve heard the horror stories, of course,” she said, “so we wanted to make sure that at the very least if she fell in, she’d at least know and be able to keep her head above water.”

Another Lakeview mother, Sarah Casey, started her 4-year-old son, Simon, at British Swim School at Lambeth House in March after hearing an advertisement for the new school on NPR.

Tulane Colorectal Cancer Screening Saves Lives

Tulane surgeon Dr. Jacquelyn Turner is helping expand treatment options and improve patient outcomes across the Gulf South.

“Simon took some private lessons last summer, but I think having the peer pressure of group lessons is giving him the little push he needs,” she said. “I love that instructors meet each kid where they are and that they automatically move them to the next level when they’re ready. Simon had a real fear of the water, and he was so much more comfortable after his first lesson.”

But swim lessons are not just for the young, in fact, Rebecca King, general manager of the popular Uptown swim school Love Swimming, said in the past three years she’s seen a big increase in older adults looking for instruction.

“Some are finding that as they age, they can’t ride a bike or run anymore but they still want to keep exercising so they turn to swimming,” she said. “For those that have never swam laps before there can be issues if you aren’t breathing properly. That’s where we come in.”

New Orleans JCC

The history of New Orleans’s Jewish Community Center extends back to 1855, but the 5342 St. Charles Ave. location dates to 1948, when it was known as the Jewish Children’s Home. That facility was replaced by the current iteration in 1966. In 1986, a second JCC location was opened in Metairie, which received a state-of-the-art facility in 2003 on 3747 West Esplanade.

The Basics: The Uptown, St. Charles Avenue location includes four pools — three outdoor and one indoor. The outdoor, six lane heated pool, splash pad and family pool are seasonal (May 10 through September). The three-lane heated indoor pool is open year-round.

Lessons at the Uptown location are offered year-round. In Metairie, lessons are offered seasonally. All lessons are designed using the guidelines of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program.

The JCC offers a “Bubble Babies” program — an adult and child program of interactive water activities, as well as group swim classes for ages 2 through adult. Private and semi-private lessons are available for JCC members ages 3 and older.

Swim lessons are also offered at both locations as part of the JCC’s summer camps.

Cost: Lessons are available twice a week for $160 per month for members and $200 for non-members, or on Saturdays for $80 per month for members and $100 for non-members.

Of Note: Options are also available for proficient swimmers looking to improve their skills via a “Stroke Academy” for ages 8 to 13 and the “Master’s Program” for ages 18 and up.
